IMPLATS 11 SHAFT TO CLOSE FOR SEVERAL DAYS                                      
Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) regrets to advise the death of       
two employees on Friday, 31 May 2002, as a result of a fall of ground at        
Impala Platinum Limited`s 11 Shaft.  This follows the death of two other        
employees at 11 Shaft during May.                                               
As a result, management has decided to temporarily close 11 Shaft for           
several days, providing an opportunity to assess the extent to which teams      
are working to standards and procedures.  Blasting operations will not          
recommence until all panels having been assessed and all deviations from        
standards rectified.                                                            
This is in line with Implats` commitment to eliminating accidents and           
achieving world-class standards in health and safety.                           
11 Shaft accounts for some 10% of Impala`s production.  The financial impact    
on the operation is expected to be minimal.
