The Board of Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) announced today (5
June 2001) the appointment of Keith Rumble as CEO and Managing Director of
Implats. Rumble will succeed current CEO John Smithies when he retires in
mid-July this year.
Implats Chairman Michael McMahon said that Rumble's appointment followed an
extensive search locally and internationally: "There were few candidates
that fitted our bill: We were looking for a combination of visionary
leadership and international strategic management experience. That Keith has
extensive local experience and a technical background is an additional
bonus.
"This appointment, coupled with the ongoing exceptional performance of our
senior team and the coming to fruition of Implats' growth strategy, means
that with Keith the company is well positioned for its next phase of growth
and the further unlocking of value. Not only is Implats well placed to
deliver more than 2 million ounces of platinum per annum to the market by
2006, it will continue to deliver superior levels of returns to its
shareholders."
McMahon paid tribute to Smithies who has led Implats since September last
year, and who has had a long and distinguished career with the group.  "John
played a central part in the operational turnaround at Implats and has
firmly positioned the company as one of the lowest cost, most efficient
primary platinum producers in the world."
