PRESS RELEASE a?? FATALITIES AT KDC WEST YA-RONA SHAFT


Johannesburg, 2 July 2012: Further to the media releases
issued on Sunday 1 July 2012, Gold Fields Limited (Gold
Fields) (JSE, NYSE, NASDAQ Dubai: GFI) regrets to confirm that
five employees lost their lives at the KDC West Ya-Rona Shaft
(KDC 4 Shaft), near Merafong in South Africa, after a fire
broke out on Saturday night, 30 June 2012.

Gold Fields' Chief Executive Officer, Nick Holland, said: a??The
tragic loss of five of our colleagues is deeply shocking to
all of us at Gold Fields. We extend our deepest condolences
and heartfelt sympathy to their families, friends and
colleagues. We are in the process of contacting their next of
kin and will do all in our power to assist them through this
difficult time. We will also thoroughly investigate the causes
of this tragic accident."

Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields' South Africa
Region, Peter Turner, added: a??On this particular shaft a?? Ya
Rona a?? wea??ve had 655 fatality-free working days (2 years and 9
months) before this tragedy. This incident is highly
regrettable in view of the significant safety improvements
wea??ve experienced. We will cooperate fully with the
authorities and all stakeholders to investigate the causes of
the accident.a??

Eleven people remain in hospital for routine observation
following the accident.

Fire fighters from the Mine Rescue Services have been working
around the clock to bring the fire at the Ya-Rona shaft under
control.

The Department of Mineral Resources has issued a Section 54
notice to withdraw all employees from the KDC West complex
until a Section 11.5 investigation has been conducted in order
to assess the level of similar risk in other parts of the KDC
West complex.

Management has, however, closed the entire KDC mine complex
(KDC East and KDC West comprising 13 shafts) until further
notice.
